The MASTERS are seasoned artists with longstanding careers in the art world
like Violet Parkhurst, whose collectors include President George Bush Sr.
and King Faud of Saudi Arabia. The APPRENTICES are established emerging
artists on the forefront of innovation like Ryan Martin, Mara Light and
Mario Robinson. Each artist received three 5x7 inch canvases in which they
were instructed to recreate a dream. The impressions will bear the artists
on the back, rather than the cover, in order to keep each image anonymous.
Each canvas will be on display at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum,
bearing a reference number. For the cost of $250.00, a fraction of the
actual value, a donor can take the reference number, claiming the piece of
art and the artist will be revealed at the end of the show. There will be an
even distribution between the Masters and Apprentices, offering an equal
opportunity and the lure of obtaining a piece of art created by a Master.
There is also the hope that the Apprentice will one day become a Master and
the emancipated youth will one day be Apprentices.
Proceeds will fund recipient program SELF PORTRAIT: Passport to Paris,
which will allow ten emancipated foster youth the opportunity to study art
in Paris during the summer of 2007.
What Dreams Are Artists Defending?
To exist as an artist is to surrender to beliefs, patterns and colors that
often move counterclockwise to the pace of modern civilization. Using the
self as a mirror of life art has been thrust to the forefront of every
movement, depicting the unimagined. Collectively, as artists, our craft will
be used to defend foster youth and the dream that “Nothing is final.”
